A Gorgeous Cy Young Autograph Display
PSA/DNA Graded Mint 9
Where do we start when speaking about Cy Young?
For starters, he was one of the thirteen original members enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The discussion might stop right there, however, in addition, Major League Baseball's annual award for pitching excellence is named for him - the all important Cy Young Award. Could there be a better way to pay homage to this baseball legend?
Over his 22 year career, he won an incredible 511 games, a record that will never be broken (promise!). That's an average of 23 games per season! In fact, he won 30-plus games in five different seasons, pitching for the Boston and Cleveland franchises. He also had the distinction of pitching in the very first World Series for the champion Boston Americans (versus the Pittsburgh Pirates led by Honus Wagner). He won two of those games, posting a 1.85 era in 34 innings. He delivered 3 no-hitters, including a perfect game, during his illustrious 22 years in baseball, retiring at the ripe old age of 44.
Cy Young autographs are considered rare, he having passed away in 1955, long before signings became popular with collectors and fans. His name appears on virtually every want list creating an overall scarcity for collectors. In fact, Major League pitchers who have won the award often buy these displays and feature them alongside the awards themselves.
Here's an opportunity to own a Mint example, the type of quality we love to purchase. Quality and rarity are our "stock in trade", and we certainly do not mind "stretching" for the finest pieces. PSA/DNA has assigned the grade "Mint 9" to this over-sized, dark-black fountain pen autograph. It measures an atypical 3-inches long and is a non-shaky example of this elusive signature. Toward the end of his life his signature began to breakdown and became somewhat cryptic. This one flows beautifully, and as such deserves the awarded grade by PSA/DNA.
We paired the autograph with a sharply focused 12 x 9 inch photograph of the master in pitching pose from his time in Cleveland. The two have been double matted in an attractive custom frame under ultraviolet protected plexiglass. In addition, the autograph has been placed in archival mylar for further protection. The result is one very impressive display. We particularly like the contrast of colors our framer used for the display. It is certainly eye-catching, but of course quality always is!
