Gorgeous Christy Mathewson Signed Autograph Display
PSA Graded Mint 9 - Extremely Rare!
Another great find recently uncovered in the hobby and it's a beauty indeed - a gorgeous Mint 9 example of this baseball icon Christy Mathewson, an original 1936 inductee to the Hall of Fame. Even better, it is an unusually clean, problem-free autograph that measures 4 inches long.
Mathewson autographs simply do not surface this large in size. The typical ones are found on checks, which tend to be cluttered and busy. Those signatures of course are smaller in size and lighter in strength. Advanced collectors prefer larger exemplars that can be displayed solely by themselves, the same underlying notion of collecting single-signed baseballs. His bold-black fountain pen ink script contrasts beautifully on the cream color background page, creating the perfect display. By far the finest one we've encountered and therefore a "must" for our inventory.
Christy Mathewson (1880-1925), known as the Big Six, or simply Matty, is considered the best pitcher of his era (along with Walter Johnson). After a successful college career at Bucknell, he won 373 games in his illustrious 17-year professional career spanning 1900 to 1916, posting a .665 winning percentage, winning twenty games or more an astounding 12 consecutive seasons. In 1908 alone he won 37 games (against just 11 losses), posted a 1.43 era over 390 innings pitched. His career era is 2.13. Of course it was no surprise that he was one of the five players inducted into the Hall of Fame's inaugural class in 1936. That exclusive class also included Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, and of course, Johnson.
Matty passed away in 1925 at the young age of 45. The cause was tuberculosis, the result of exposure to chemical weapons used during his service in World War One. Thus his autograph is not an easy one to obtain. As noted, the vast majority are those found on canceled checks that his wife later gave away upon autograph requests. They were of limited supply and the only examples she had of his elaborate signature. Even then, collectors knew how special his script would become. Nicer examples of those checks generally command upwards of $20,000 in auction. An autographed photograph or baseball of comparable quality would easily fetch six-figures in auction in today's lively market… quality always finds buyers.
This exemplar by far exceeds those on checks and has been awarded the exalted grade of Mint 9 by the experts at PSA/DNA. That in itself should tell the tale, but equally important to us is the size, the boldness and the "non-clutter" of his beautifully stylistic autograph. It stands out and makes a statement indeed.
To make this valuable item complete we needed to locate the perfect Mathewson photograph. It didn't take long to figure that out: we chose an example of the finest and most important image of all--the iconic Charles Conlon portrait of Matty in Giants pinstripes - The perfect photo image with the finest autograph.!
The two have been professionally double-matted and placed in an exquisite frame, making that wonderful presentation required for a collectible of this magnitude. Ultraviolet-protected plexiglass was used of course, as was archival Mylar. The result is one impressive piece of memorabilia.
Almost every advanced sports collection is in need of a Christy Mathewson autograph. This one more than adequately satisfies that issue. If you are searching for the finest exemplar of this baseball icon, look no further.
Historically important and in the finest condition - the Best of the Best and certainly one we proudly recommend to even the most fastidious collector.
