The Boss!

George Steinbrenner is the most legendary owner in the history of sports, with an extremely hands-on approach! From the time he purchased the Yankees in 1973 until his death in 2010, The Boss led the Yankees to 7 World Series Titles and 11 American Pennants. Sure, there were some controversies and a hiatus along the way, but there’s no doubt that Steinbrenner was committed to putting a winning ball club on the field every single year.

Offered here is a typed letter on official George Steinbrenner III Yankees stationary signed by The Boss in bold blue ink. The letter is a response to a man who was looking for a job with the New Jersey Nets of the NBA.

A Brief History…
In 1999, the Yankees merged with the Nets to create YankeesNets, LLC. The following year, YankeesNets purchased the New Jersey Devils of the NHL. Devils General Manager Lou Lamoriello, another top sports-executive, was then promoted to Chairman and CEO of the Devils, as well as vice-chairman and CEO of the co-owned New Jersey Nets. In his duties with the Nets, Lamoriello worked alongside Rod Thorn, a front office legend in the basketball world who oversaw the Bulls drafting Michael Jordan in 1984 and helped put together the Dream Team for the 1992 Olympic Games.

Back to the Letter...
Steinbrenner replies to the potential future employee that Nets operations are run by Lamoriello and Thorn because he has “confidence in their abilities”, and he will forward the resume over to them. When collecting signed letters, content is key. This particular piece has it all, with the most iconic owner in all of sports referencing two other legendary high-level sports executives. Additionally, if you look back at the Yankees, Nets, and Devils at the time this letter was signed, August 5, 2002, they were three of the most successful franchises in all of sports. The Yankees had won four World Series Titles in the previous six years. The Devils made the Stanley Cup Finals in 2000, 2001, and 2003, winning in 2000 and 2003. And the Nets were Eastern Conference Champions in 2002… Who wouldn’t want to work for one of these franchises, or the group that owned all three?!

The letter has been custom framed and matted along with the original Yankee envelope and comes with a Letter of Authenticity from JSA.
