Erwin Rommel (1891–1944), a German army officer who attained the rank of field marshal during World War II, became well-known both at home and internationally for his command of Germany's Afrika Korps in North Africa. Rommel, often known by the nickname "the Desert Fox," oversaw German defenses against the Allied invasion of northern France.
