While most of the value in sports collecting is found in vintage memorabilia, modern varieties can be a solid investment as well, if done right. Since the hobby has become extremely commercialized today, athletes are constantly signing and card companies are printing cardboard around the clock. Over the years, we’ve encouraged our clients to invest in more specialized modern memorabilia that is not mass produced. Derek Jeter, for example, is probably the most popular baseball player of the last 20 years. Thus, his autograph is quite abundant. However, most are found on signed baseballs and photos in typical “Jeterian” style. Offered here is not your typical Derek Jeter autograph. In fact, this is quite scarce. The 1993 SP Foil is by far Jeter’s most rare and sought after rookie card – a PSA Graded Gem Mint 10 example recently sold in auction for $138,000!
This autographed example was signed by Jeter early in his career (c. 2000). This is made evident by the more deliberate and larger signature opposed to the sloppier and quicker style commonly seen later in his career and today. Autographs signed early in an athlete's career are much more valuable and desirable than those signed during retirement. This is one of the best ways to collect modern autographs – a rare, early style signature featured on a tough rookie card. The signature has been graded 7 by the experts at PSA.
