Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax is easily the hobby’s most collected and sought after Golden Age pitcher – from autographs, cards, and in this case, original photos.
Offered here is an Original Type I Photograph of the Dodger lefty taken at Dodger Stadium in the 1960’s. The 7.5in x 9.5 in. zoomed in action-shot perfectly captures Koufax’s concentration and intensity as he approaches home plate. Notice how low his body is, especially his left hand, with the baseball nearly touching the dirt.
Despite a relatively short career (1955-1966), Koufax proved to be one of the most dominant pitchers the game has ever seen. In that time period from when this photo was taken and issued (1960-66), Koufax was named National League MVP in 1963, won three Cy Young Awards (1963, 65, 66), and two World Series Titles in 1963 and ’65 (W.S. MVP in both).
A Type 1 photo is a first generation photograph, developed from the original negative during the period. They are the most desirable and valuable of the four photograph types because of their clarity, vintage, and originality.
In a world where cards and autographs have dominated the hobby, vintage photography is an emerging genre of sports collecting that will continue to rise. These original photographs are extremely scarce with only a handful known – in many cases one of a kind! Serious collectors consider them true artifacts, as opposed to cards and other memorabilia that were mass produced for commercial sale and advertising.
