1863 Troy NY Civil War Token, NGC AU53
Robinson And Ballou
Obverse: "Robinson & Ballou, Troy N.Y., Grocers"
Reverse: "Redeemed At Our Store, 1863"
Civil War tokens were privately minted and distributed from 1861-1864. These tokens were widely used because of the scarce amount of cents issued by the government during the Civil War. Congress banned the production of all private coinage on June 8, 1864.
